GPIB (IEEE-488) Bus Verification

Use the GPIB Controller and the Model 4500B to perform basic operations.

1. Connect the GPIB controller and the 4500B with a GPIB cable.

2. Press the Init system key and Init > Defaults > LOAD to put the 4500B in a known state.

3. Set the 4500B to use the SCPI language mode (instead of the 4500A emulation mode)

with the Util > Remote Conf > GPIB > Emulate 4500A > OFF menu selection.

4. Util > Remote Conf > GPIB > Bus Setup >

Address # menu. Choose a convenient number between 1 and 30 that will be unique to

the test instrument.

5. Press the CLR key to clear any pending errors.

6. Using the GPIB controller, send the command *IDN? to the Model 4500B. The REM

message should appear in the lower right display rectangle indicating that the Model

 the LSN message should appear when the command is

sent, indicating 

7. Use the GPIB controller to read a string from the 4500B. A string similar to the

following should be returned:

Boonton Electronics,4500B,103,ver20051007

software version number. The TLK message should appear indicating that the Model

4500B is in the talk mode.

8. Using the GPIB controller, send the command SYSTem:ERRor? The lower case letters

are optional. Use the GPIB controller to read a string from the 4500B. The following

should be received:

0, "No Error"

If there were an error, a non-zero code number and a short message would be received.

9. Press the Local system key. The REM message should disappear. If it does not, the GPIB




